They asked me a bunch of questions about how Christmas is celebrated in Colombia and also a random question about Batman.

I mention at the end of the episode that I've created an English/Spanish radio show with a station here in Barranquilla. The station is called "Plenitud Stereo" and can be found online at http://www.plenitudstereo.com/ My Show, "Inglés Al Limite," airs on Plenitud Stereo 96.6 FM Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8-8:30 pm. My house in Los Andes, Barranquilla is surrounded by our 30 new Peace Corps Trainees. Some live on the same street as me, others a few blocks away, and still more within a short 15 minute walk. My students are now running into them on the street, and I even ran into a few the day after they moved into their new homes. Needless to say, this is quite a surprise to the Colombians that live in my neighborhood. Last week, a handful of current Volunteers from Barranquilla, Cartagena and Santa Marta traveled to Barranquilla's airport to welcome our 30 new Peace Corps Trainees to Colombia. After helping them toss their luggage into a giant moving van, we traveled back to their hotel to perform two song parodies (current pop hit "Call Me Maybe" and 90s pop sensation "All Star") that would prepare them for the coming months of training and service. In mid-August, my Colombian/American jazz band hit the road to play a free concert in Campo de la Cruz, a 20,000 person town about 2 hours outside of Barranquilla. We got there late because of non-stop rain, but there was no rain that night as we played for more than 200 people in the town square.

Now that summer's over, I'm going to start communicating with another group of students, and I wanted to share some of what they sent me back in May to kick start the new school year. Thanks again to Mr. Adams at Woodward-Granger High School for making all this possible!

(From January to May of this year, I kept in contact with two schools back home in Iowa through the World Wise Schools program. When I was med-evac'd because of the mistakes made by my Peace Corps Nurse, I also had the chance to visit students in person and give them a few gifts from Colombia)

Semana Santa (the Holy Week before Easter), is a bigger deal in Colombia than America. It's a time to spend with your families, visit many churches, and for teachers, not work for at least 9 days counting weekends. During this marathon vacation, I was invited to participate in a pilgrimage to a mountain near the beach of Puerto Colombia, about 30-45 minutes by bus outside my home of Barranquilla. I was using crutches at the time due to an injury during the Peace Corps Colombia Staff vs Volunteers soccer game, but the most difficult part was actually just the endurance I needed to summon to keep going. The climb was easy and gradual but also very, very long. When I got to the top, I became an instant celebrity with the priests.

By Wednesday of the same week, I hard torn the cartilage in my left knee playing soccer. My fellow volunteers were pretty worried about what that could mean for me, but I was happy that at least there was no mystery; the prognosis and medical solution were both pretty straight forward.

Chance explains that after returning home from Peace Corps training that afternoon, the party was on as family, friends, cake, soup and whiskey were in abundance. That night, he eventually taught several children how to play drums, had a few conversations in Spanish, and was able to make most in attendance laugh as they listened to him repeat "No entiendo" (I don't understand) in Spanish.
